Del Marcos Hotel

Del Marcos is a hotel in Palm Springs California designed by William F. Cody, a well known architect that designed in the mid century modern style. However, the hotel hasn’t been maintained, and the initial charm has worn off.

The new brand focuses on bright colors and an abstracted circle mark resembling the sun over a desert. The color palette, rules, and typography bring a fresh feeling, but still pay homage to the initial hotel brand and style.

Updated Brand
Spatial Design
Media Design

Brand Extensions

As an interesting experiment, the first designs I finalized were the postcards. Before I had the finished logo, imagery, anything. I decided the postcard style would frame the brand. Through this I decided to focus on bold typography, layered imagery, and geometric patterns. With these, the brand starts to come together.
The colors and pattern are indicative of the Palm Springs area. Colors directly sampled from the desert, patterns that echo back to the mid-centrury modern flare of the city, and geometric textures mimicing water in pools.

Brand extensions focus on the interaction between the circular mark and tracked out type. Playful layouts, creative copy to keep the guests smiling, and subtle designs make up the brand. Matchboxes, totes, and coasters have subtle designs that guests will want to bring home.

Along with the traditional components of a brand, I wanted to visualize the space in a new way. Room and space renovations to match the new style and feel will go with the rebrand. Furniture and finishings will pay homage to the mid century feel of Palm Springs while also bringing in the desert.

As a final set of deliverables, I designed a Spa line for the hotel. Del Marcos hotel features a well established restaurant and has the perfect location/setup for a spa. Adding this in will make the hotel feel like a real resort escape.
Amber glass and a switch to white typography defines the spa brand. The mark, style, and playfulness of the hotel find ways into the packaging, but still convey all essential information about the product... in a subdued, natural feel. Just like a spa should be.
